KC3 Pollution; Final draft

Ocean Pollution

Hawaii is known for its beautiful beaches that are home to many different sea animals.  Many tourists travel to Hawaii to view the colorful sunsets and long miles of golden sand.  However, over the years more and more trash has ended up in the ocean. Research shows that litter on Hawaii's beaches has increased by 77% since 1994.  Each year, over one billion pounds of trash end up in the ocean, leading to harmful effects on animals.  Litter on beaches is increasing rapidly due to the overpopulation in Hawaii.  Pollution in the ocean is the cause for many species to become endangered.
Of all the waste that goes into the ocean, plastic is the most destructive.  "Plastic is a long-lasting pollutant that does not fully break down."  Since plastic cannot break down, the amount of this pollutant can only increase in the ocean.  Many people travel long distances to visit Hawaii's sites.  With more tourist traveling to Hawaii, it means that more litter will go on beaches.  "90% of waste that washes up onto beaches is plastic."  Many species end up eating plastic, and dying tragic deaths.. Animals such as turtles mistake garbage floating in the ocean as their food.  50-80% of sea turtles are found dead due to ingesting plastic.  Pollution is causing a lot of damage to Hawaii's enviroment.
The increase of tourism in Hawaii means the rise of pollution in the water.  "Population in Hawaii is growing an average of 1.12% each year."  More people equals more trash and litter on the ground, and in the air.  Thousands of animals such as seabirds, seals, turtles, etc.  are killed after getting entangled in garbage.  "We're drawing direct lines from human nutrients inputs to the reefs ecosystem and how it affects wildlife."  When people litter, it leads to the death of many animals.. Humans leave man-made products, such as sunscreen and tanning lotion in the ocean, which ruins the coral reefs that is home to many animals.  Overpopulation in Hawaii is causing more pollution on beaches.
Pollution in the ocean is causing the deaths, and diseases of many animals.  More than 300 species have gone endangered due to pollution in the ocean.  Animals such as Hawaiian Monk seals, and green sea turtles are part of those 300 species.  "Pollution in Hawaii is causing tumours on these endangered turtles."  Nitrogen run-offs from farm waste is the cause of all these tumours. The ocean is becoming more and more contaminated, making it deadly for sea animals.  Research shows that, "93% of Hawaiian sea turtles have these deadly tumours."  known as Fibropapillomatosis.  Human debris is a huge factor to the deaths of many different sea animals.  Scientists find that hundreds of species are being harmed or killed by the trash that people toss into the ocean.  Pollution has had a direct and deadly effect on wildlife.
Among the grains of sand, there are billions of tiny plastic pieces covering the surface of beaches in Hawaii.  Like pollution, population in Hawaii is increasing each year.  How much longer can we keep this image of "paradise" up, when our beaches are being contaminated?  Pollution is very hazardous and deadly to the environment.  Many ocean animals are becoming endangered due to the pollution in the ocean. Hawaii's environment is being greatly effected by the amount of pollution increasing on beaches.

My Querencia; final

Having 2 sisters and a house full of pets can be somewhat chaotic at times.  There are some days where I feel like I am the luckiest girl alive to have such a wonderful family.. On other days however, there are times where I can't handle the arguing or the barking of my dogs.  Sometimes,I find myself having a bad day, whether its from being stressed about school or nervous for a game.  On those days,  I end up just closing my door, and laying on my bed.
Shutting my bedroom door is like blocking out all of the distractions and problems in my life.  When I am upset, or having a bad day, I lie on my bed and look at the stars..  And not the stars in the sky.  When I was younger, my mom hung up these plastic glow in the dark stars on the ceiling of my room.  I use to think it was silly, and I thought that I was getting too old for them.  Little did I know that those stars were going to be the things that got me through life.
One night when I was 8 years old,  I remember kissing my cat, Kitcat, goodnight. I went to my room, and snuggled into my blanket.  I woke up suddenly after hearing my mom shout my name.  I flung the blanket off of me and ran out of the room to find out what had happened.  Looking around, I saw Kelci crying and Kitcat meowing in a box..  Why is Kitcat in a box?  My eyes squinted in confusion as I saw my mom grab her keys.  It was almost 10, where would she be going?  She told me in a gentle voice that she was giving MY cat away because she bit Kelci.  Hearing this felt like my heart had just shattered into a million pieces.  I couldn't believe this was happening, nor could I bare to say goodbye to Kitcat.  Instead, I ran upstairs to the one place I felt safe...my room.  Tears were streaming down face as I tried to breathe..  Closing the door, I blocked out all the troubles and problems in my life. I threw myself down on the bed and stared up at the stars on my ceiling.  Lying on my bed, listening to the whispers of the wind, I began to calm down.  Hugging my pillow, I sighed feeling comfort in my "safe" place.
Whenever I am feeling down or upset, I always go up to my room to calm down. From looking at the old baby pictures hanging on my wall to staring at the stars on my ceiling, my room has always been my safe haven. It is a place where no one can judge me and I can sit alone to relax.  The one place I go to,to relax and get away from people is my room.

picture frame paragraph: kaylee and rhysa

Every year I count down the days till Christmas. The days seem like months as I wait for the day to come. The nights are colder so I make myself a warm hot chocolate. It has whipped cream and marshmallows on top in my favorite mug. When I take my first sip the hot chocolate warms my body as it goes down my throat. The hot chocolate has the right amount of sweetness to it. It's not too sweet and not too watered down. On a chilly winter night it tastes just right. With my hot chocolate in my hand, I snuggle in my blanket and watch Christmas movies on the Hallmark channel.
I wake up to the sound of my alarm clock. It is 6:45 a.m. on Christmas morning. I am ready to open all my presents. Running up the stairs, the excitement builds up as I shout "Wake up!" Everyone makes their way to the bright sparkling Christmas tree in the living room. I walk into the room and instantly smell the scent of pine trees and chocolate chip cookies. As I grab my first present, rip open the nicely wrapped paper. When all the paper is off and scattered on the ground I reached into the box and felt something soft and silky. I pulled out a beautiful dress that I've wanted for years. A wave of happiness washed though me as I hugged my mom. "Merry Christmas," my parents shouted.

On other days however, there are times where I can't handle the arguing or bouncing of a ball.   At times, I find myself having a bad day, whether its from being stressed about school or nervous for a game.  On those days,  I end up just closing my door, and laying on my bed.

My "Special Place"

Looking around, I see  beautiful palm trees swaying in the wind with a picture perfect sunset just behind them..  The sound of waves crashing in the distance, and the smell of the ocean lures me closer and closer to the sea.  The gentle breeze that brushes across my face sends a wave of relaxation through me.  As I walk across the warm sand, I know that this is  how happiness truly feels like. This is  my special place.  A place where I can go to relax, be myself, and just forget about all of my problems.

Words From the Heart; Final Draft

When playing sports, athletes need to prepare for a big game not only at practices, but also right before the game.   Most athletes have their pre-game ritual they do to get them ready for the game, both mentally and physically..  Whether it's from listening to their favorite songs, to saying a prayer, everyone is different.  Many athletes have that one person they go to, to prepare them for the game.   That one person can say something and you feel like you're about to play the best game of your life.  For me, the one thing that got me prepared for a game was when my mom said the words, "No sked em' go get em."
When I first started playing soccer at 4 years old, the first thing my mom would say to me would be "No sked em' go get em.".  She didn't want me to play timid like all the other little kids.  "Play like how I used to play" she would joke.  I was generally amused by that phrase since it sounded funny, like something I would read from a Dr. Suess book.   I would always smile and nod hearing the phrase, as saying it became a part of my routine before a game.
I never really took the phrase seriously until I grew older and sports became more competitive.  I remember when I was 11 years old, I was freaking out because I was about to play my first HYSA game.  In the car with my leg nervously shaking, my mom gave her pep talk, and finally said the words, "No sked em' go get em".  That was the first time I actually thought about it, and took the phrase seriously.  I knew that I would have to play tough since I was a scrawny little sixth grader playing against huge middle schoolers.  As the whistle blew to start the game, I remember feeling my heart beat super fast.  The sun was beating down on my back as the phrase "No sked em' go get em" echoed in my head.  Looking towards the sideslines at my mom, I smiled and gave her a shaky thumbs up.  Determined, I ended up holding my ground and actually got recognized by my new coach.  Since then,  I always used the phrase as an inspiration and motivation to strive to play my best.
The phrase "No sked em' go get em" does not only apply to sports, but to other aspects of my life as well.  When I was in elementary school, my self esteem was not the highest.  I was not the smartest student, nor the most talented.  However, I wanted to run as the Moanalua Elementary student government recording secretary.  I worked my butt off to write campaign speeches and make posters.   On the day of our speech, I thought about that quote my mom would always say.  I shook the nerves away, said my speech, and actually won!  After the voting was over, I gave my mom a big hug, knowing that without that phrase, I don't think I would have had the courage to run.
Sometimes the things that affect your life the most, could be as simple as a phrase.  It may not be the deepest, but it sure made a huge difference in my life.  Whether it's before every game, or an important presentation, I will always keep that phrase in my mind.  It has always helped me to face many of my fears, and to tough things out.  It was never "just a phrase" to me.  It was a special thing that only my mom would say to me.  Although she doesn't say it as much anymore, I still think about it whenever I am nervous or scared.  Whenever you come across something difficult in life, just remember, "No sked em' go get em!"

CNN chunky paragraph

The "dead dog beach" in Puerto Rico is a place where many owners abandon their unwanted pets.  "We fight so the dogs of Puerto Rico don't have to."  The Sato Project is an amazing organization that saves dogs that have been abandoned on the "Dead Dog Beach".  Many dogs have been found starving, with broken bones, shivering the rain waiting to be loved.  Over 300 dogs have been seen wandering around the beach in packs (paraphrase of paragraph 9).   All of the Sato project volunteers work hard to raise money and promote the organization (summary of paragraph 23).  Chrissy Beckles,  head of the Sato Project is an amatuer boxer who fights to raise money for the organization.  The volunteers work hard to raise money, and have saved over 1400 dogs so far.  Whether it's from rescuing the dogs, to transporting them to shelters, every volunteer works hard to make The Sato Project better and better.

This is me

HI! My name is Kaylee Sumida, and this is my blog.. "The Write Side of Life".  The reason I chose this title, was because I am living life on the WRITE side.  Basically, if you do the right thing and make good decisions, you will have a better chance of becoming successful in life.  One of the main things I live by is, "It's what you do when nobody is watching that counts."  If you make the right choices, something good will come out of it. I hope to make my blog different than others, by using my OWN voice, putting pretty pictures, and just making my blog interesting to look at.  I chose a simple template because personally, all the fancy templates and backgrounds makes it hard to look at.
The world I come from, is a basic life.  We may not be millionaires, but we have enough to live a comfortable, free life.  The one thing I absolutely love to do, is play sports such as soccer and volleyball.  For me, soccer is not only a sport, but my stress reliever.  If I am feeling down, or angry I automatically grab a ball and start practicing to get my mind off things.  Usually after practice, the first thing I think is, "What am I going to eat?"  I LOVE to eat, especially burgers and pasta..  However, I refuse to eat fish, and will eat only certain vegetables.
Normally, I'm not a grouchy person, but some things really bug me.. One of my biggest pet peeves is when I'm setting for volleyball.  Sometimes, when the hitters don't get the kill, they complain about the set.  If I'm ever in a mood, my favorite things to do is go on a hike, or go to the beach.  I love to explore and try to find new beaches or go on different hiking trails.  Most mornings, I go on a run with my dog, Hachi.  The cool, calming morning breeze always refreshes me and gets me ready for the day.   THATS ME!
